McCabe further thinks that the revolutionary who is a Christian ought to be committed to forgiving her enemies. This will, not unreasonably, be met with concern by many Marxists, fearful of premature reconciliation serving to defuse necessary conflict. Surely a worker who forgives her boss for years of real-terms pay cuts is not going to then join in strike action against that boss. Eminently insightful in the light of currently dominant understandings of forgiveness, which have been criticized by feminists amongst others, this misses how McCabe (and arguably the mainstream of Christian tradition) thinks about the matter. For him, to forgive one’s enemy is to refuse to be bitter or vindictive against them, it is to wager on a future in which I might live alongside my enemy peaceably (thought about in Christian terms as the kingdom of God). It is emphatically not to abandon the struggle for a just and loving society, which will continue to pit me in antagonism against those capitalism makes into my enemies. This is of relevance to the next item on our agenda, how Marxist politics can be reconciled with life in the Church.
